Information We Collect

Information You Provide

Memoir Content: Text, voice recordings, and photos you create within the App to build your memoir.
Photos and Media: When you import photos, we access them locally to attach to your memories. Photos are stored on-device only.
Voice Recordings: Audio recordings you create during interviews or dictation are stored locally on your device.

Information Processed by AI

Interview Responses: When you use AI-guided interviews, your spoken or typed responses are sent to our AI service for generating follow-up questions and polishing narratives.
Text for Enhancement: When you request AI narrative polish or cultural enrichment, the relevant text is sent to our secure proxy server for processing. This data is not stored permanently on external servers.

Information Collected Automatically

Device Information: Device type and operating system version for compatibility purposes.
Crash Data: Anonymous crash reports to help us improve app stability.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Provide AI-guided interview experiences and narrative generation
Polish and enhance your memoir content at your request
Store and organize your memoirs, memories, and photos locally on your device
Generate PDF exports of your memoir for sharing
Improve app stability and performance

Data Storage and Security

Local-First Approach: All your memoirs, memories, photos, and audio recordings are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. We do not upload your personal content to our servers.

AI Processing: When you request AI features, minimal necessary text is sent through our secure Cloudflare Worker proxy to the AI service provider. This data is processed in real-time and is not stored permanently on external servers.

No Account Required: ToldByMe does not require you to create an account or sign in. Your data stays on your device.

Security Measures: AI requests are authenticated using HMAC-SHA256 signing with replay protection. All network communication uses HTTPS encryption.

Third-Party Services

Apple App Store: For app distribution
Anthropic (Claude AI): For AI-powered interview questions and narrative enhancement (data processed, not stored)
Cloudflare: For secure API proxying and rate limiting

What We Do NOT Collect

We do not collect personal identification information
We do not track your location
We do not use advertising identifiers (IDFA)
We do not sell or share your data with third parties for marketing
We do not require any form of login or account creation

Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to:

Delete: Delete any memoir, memory, or photo directly within the App at any time
Export: Export your memoir as a PDF document
Control AI: Choose when to use AI features -- they are always opt-in
Uninstall: Removing the App deletes all locally stored data

Children's Privacy

ToldByMe is designed for adults, particularly seniors. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will delete it immediately.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
